You can expect to receive a rigorous and thorough training from SLP.
We believe that it is our responsibility to provide you with the best training possible so that you will be eventually able to discharge your duties as a lawyer effectively and independently. We adopt a traditional approach in our training by teaching you the practical and ethical aspects in the practice of law.
During your training period with the firm, you can expect to work in a dynamic environment where you will be exposed to various aspects of the law. We will attempt to develop your core competencies in the law. You can also expect to benefit greatly from our collegiate and open door policy, where you can approach any one of our senior lawyers to discuss and to clarify points of law. You will be given the opportunity to put into practice what you have learnt in university.
Your training will be guided by the Practice Training Contract Checklist set out in the schedule of the Legal Profession (Admission) Rules 2011 (“Checklist”). You should be familiar with the Checklist. You can expect to be exposed to 2 or more of the following areas of practice with our firm during your practice training period:
- Family Law
- Real Estate
- Litigation and Dispute Resolution
Your training will be structured and you will be closely monitored. You can expect your training to be intense so that you derive maximum benefits and exposures to different aspects of the law. In this respect, you will be given ample opportunities to assist at clients’ meetings, drafting of court documents, attending court hearings or board meetings and accompany our lawyers at Legal Clinics and assist the senior partners in pro bono cases from Legal Aid or Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.
You will also be given the opportunity to attend our regular litigation meetings where our litigators share their legal knowledge on current matters and discuss the latest legal changes, issues and challenges. This is one of the quickest ways to acquire knowledge as you would have a first hand experience learning from the lawyers who are handling the cases.
A Balanced Life
Life as a trainee in SLP is not all about work. You will also be given ample opportunity to mingle with our lawyers and staff in an informal setting during regular social gatherings like festive lunches and birthday celebrations. At these occasions, you would get to know and bond with lawyers and staff from the firm.
Retention Policy and Benefits
We spend a considerable amount of time and effort teaching our trainees the practical aspects of the law and to be effective lawyers. Therefore, where possible, we would like to engage our trainees as lawyers within our practice after the practice training contract.
Newly engaged lawyers can expect a starting salary which would be in line with the market at that time.
We distinguish ourselves by offering good career development and a friendly working environment. You will also be provided with annual leave, medical benefits and insurance coverage.
Continued legal training
If you are retained, we would like you to continually develop and improve your legal expertise. Therefore, you will be encouraged to attend courses, seminars and conferences conducted by the Law Society, Singapore Academy of Law and other relevant bodies.
