Straits Law Practice LLC hosts Construction Law seminar on Pitfalls to Avoid Under The Building and Construction Security of Payment Act

17 November 2017 – Deputy Managing Director, Mr Joseph Liow, gave a talk on “Pitfalls to Avoid Under The Building and Construction Security of Payment Act” at Straits Law’s Construction Law seminar held at the TKP Conference Centre. In attendance were over 30 construction practitioners from both public and private sector organisations.

The seminar provided participants with a better understanding of the common mistakes made by developers, contractors and suppliers when making claims in the construction industry, specifically regarding the Adjudication Process under the Construction Industry Security of Payment Act (“SOPA”). The Adjudication Process consist of many technical provisions and tight timelines which many construction practitioners, who are unaware of the said provisions, fall afoul of. The consequences are serious as claims or defences will not be considered should a party fall afoul of the strict timelines provided for in SOPA. The seminar highlighted the various SOPA provisions that construction practitioners should take note of, particularly when they receive a payment claims and when commencing or defending an adjudication application.
